Discovering the Buddhist Path I: From Hinayana to Mahayana

Buddhism is an ongoing dialogue between masters and disciples that has been handed on from generation to generation over 2500 years.  In this course we will focus on some major transformations within the tradition from its starting point in Buddha’s awakening to the formation of the Buddhist community, its scriptures, and its practices.  In particular, we will study the shape of early Buddhism (Hinayana) and the dynamics leading to the breakthrough insights of Mahayana Buddhism.  Everyone is welcome.  There are no reading assignments, although suggestions for optional reading will be made.  This is a lecture course with time set aside each week for discussion.
