Volunteering

Volunteer Opportunities!

The Dharma Center is run completely by volunteers. Volunteer work at the Center provides us with a beautiful vehicle for extending our practice off the cushion and into our daily lives. It is a wonderful way to meaningfully participate in our sangha (community), and to strengthen our capacity for attention, caring, and generosity.

Here are some of the many opportunities for volunteer work:

Director

Current Director: Ellen Marie
time commitment: 5-10 hours per week
term: ongoing
volunteers needed: none at this time

 

Develop annual special event programming:

    • Make arrangements with Lamas for 4-5 events per year
    • Make transportation arrangements
    • Hire translators
    • Purchase texts if necessary
    • Purchase supplies for empowerments

Develop annual classes:

    • Classes are currently offered Fall, Spring and Summer
    • Make arrangements with teachers to teach
    • Figure out optimal class dates
    • **Work to create new class offerings & find new teachers

Oversee Volunteers:

    • Check out keys to volunteers

Develop Sangha Meetings:

    • Make arrangements for sangha meetings
    • Develop agenda for meeting

Business Maintenance:

    • Maintain insurance for the organization
    • File Biennial Report to the IA Secretary of State to maintain our non-profit corp status

Building and grounds Maintenance:

  • Make purchases of thangkas, brocades, furniture and other large items

Office Assistance Team

Data entry on our Quickbooks online account 1x per week:

  • download data from Hills Bank account
  • categorizing deposits
  • categorizing expeditures
  • becoming familiar with automated reporting

Making deposits at Hills Bank 1x per month:

  • taking cash and checks to bank to deposit
  • bringing back receipts and pouch on the same day

Filing:

  • opening mail and filing appropriately

Supplies:

  • Purchase supplies like paper as needed

Thank you letters:

  • Send out hand written thank you notes to new donors.

Housekeeping and Hospitality Team

Maintain healthy environment at the Dharma Center:

  • Vacuuming the facility
  • Empty the wastebaskets
  • Communicate any larger cleaning that needs to be done
Public Relations Team

1-3 hours per week
term: 6 months preferred
volunteers needed:

Maintain website:

  • Update website to reflect current classes and upcoming events

Maintain and Send Mailchimp emails:

  • Add walk-in visitor information to Mailchimp
  • Create newsletters for special events
  • Create newsletters for monthly or weekly updates
  • **Add address data from Acceptiva to Mail chimp

Maintain our presence on Meetup:

  • Send welcome emails out to new meetup members
  • Send special events & classes information out on meetup

Maintain our presence on Facebook:

  • Post special events & classes information
  • Post information about our practice times
  • Post Drikung dharma and other stories

Flyers & Posters for special events:

  • Create flyers and posters for special events
  • Have flyers posted in approximately 10 locations around town

 

 

Sangha Care Team

Current Team Members:  Ellen Marie

5-15 hours per year
term: 6 months preferred

**Visiting the sick, housebound & providing meals for those in need. Helping local Buddhist families with death and dying preparations. 

  • **Research & create a report from Churches /synagogue about how they handle providing meals for sick members
  • **Talk with Pam Stayman in Dayton sangha about arrangements for death and dying
  • **Develop relationship with Tsunma Yeshi at Jangchubling nunnery in Dehra Dun India to ask for prayers for ill members and others. (Communication is via email or FB messenger phone)

Shrine Keeper Team

time commitment:
20 minutes, Saturdays | 20 minutes, Sundays &  Special Events as possible
term: 6 months preferred
volunteers needed:   
1-2 more volunteers needed


20 minutes before practice time:

    • fill the bowls
    • light the candles
    • light incense

After practice:

    • empty the bowls
    • snuff out candles
    • keep track of when we need more supplies
Special Events Team

Current Team Members:  Ellen Marie, Naomi, Catherine, Dana
time commitment:
8-15 hours per year
term: 6 months preferred
volunteers needed:   
1-2 more volunteers needed


Shrine Room Preparation:

  • Get pecha stands and cushions turned around for the teaching

Text Preparation:

  • Determine number of texts that we need for empowerment and/or teaching

Tea Service for Lama and translator:

  • Get all tea items prepared in advance
  • Find volunteers to serve tea to the lama during teachings

Meal/Snack Preparation:

  • Order snacks or meals based on number of participants
  • Find volunteers to help with serving and cleanup
Umze (chantmaster) Team

Current Team Members:  Ellen Marie, Naomi, Catherine, Becky
time commitment:
2 hours Saturdays, 2 hours Sundays, as needed for special events
term: 6 months preferred
volunteers needed:   
1-2 more volunteers needed


Leading practices at the center:

  • Lead weekly practice
  • Lead chants during lama visits

Coordinating new texts:

  • Researching and requesting purchase of new texts
  • Researching and requesting appropriate binding texts

**Learn drumming, cymbals  that accompanies some practices
